@Liz: I figure if you're at the very top, you've won the "game." Also puzzling to me is that according to this article (I need to read the books reviewed in it) it works the same way at the bottom -- many of the extremely poor were very happy. Making me wonder if it's a "when you've got nothing you're truly free" kind of thing.

@Brendon -- thank ye. Yes, I've read "Stumbling on Happiness " -- he did make the subject very readable. I can only read so much happiness research at once, though -- after awhile, the word "happiness" just kind of loses meaning.

@Liz -- yeah, he was pretty insufferable in the film, but not without redemption. Curious to look at his book.

"That it doesn’t make people “happier” (except, I should point out, for the very wealthy, who are happiest in all countries)"

Huh. I know there's some research that shows that once you've reached a certain level of financial security and comfort, more money won't make you any happier, which intuitively makes more sense to me.

Also, I'm surprised to hear that No Impact Man's wife ended up happy with the results of the experiment. From what I've read, NIM must have been insufferable! I mean, not even taking the subway? C'mon!

Excellent article, Sara! Have you read Daniel Gilbert's "Stumbling on Happiness"? Well worth the effort given the subject matter here. The author demonstrates using methodical means that the human brain is not equipped for predicting what will make us happy, let alone most happy, in the future. It's a psychological response to your socioeconomic call above. On top of that, Gilbert is very humorous for a science writer.
