When Frugal Goes Too Far

Overall, I’m proud of the new discipline we’re applying to our finances. But frugal can be taken too far. I realized this last week, as I nearly ran into a median driving to Target.

It was a blindingly bright day, but I couldn’t wear my sunglasses, because I wasn’t wearing my contacts.

(Do they make clip-on sunglasses for cat’s-eye glasses? I would totally wear them.)

I wasn’t wearing my contacts because my eyes were rejecting the Target-brand solution they were soaking in.

I was driving to Target, in fact, to buy the pricier sensitive-eye solution.

So, even though I seem determined to recount this story in a nursery rhyme fashion (she swallowed the spider to catch the fly…), at least I can say I avoided a tragic irony.

Here’s my moral-of-the-story pledge to you: May I never foist false or useless frugality tips on you.

We’re in this thing to learn, save, earn more, and ultimately reach larger financial goals than, “Oh God, did we shave $100 off this month’s grocery bill?”

Frugality in some things is a natural part of the process, but as an end unto itself, it can also be a trap.

  • Well, glad the word “nearly” was in that sentence, Sara! All-around great topic & great tips.

  • I totoally Agree false economiy can be worse thena over spending. I know this only too well due to many attempts to save a few pennies only to discover that the item/product is awful and that the pricier option would not only be better but also last me longer, thus saving money in the long run.

I suppose its all about making the right choices dependant on the product and yes anything to do with health is a definite no no for cheapness.

Hope you are over the shock now :)

  • Not to mention the time and effort it takes to be Frugal. And the stress, oh do without the stress. I try to!

    Hi, Sara!
