Ticket Punched: Goodbye NFL Season Pass

Cash Husband here again.

Just received an ominous e-mail from DirecTV, informing me that my e-bill is ready for viewing. I was sure this month’s bill would be back to normal, following five months of paying extra for NFL Sunday Ticket. But no. Here we are again at $114. For a month of TV.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love TV. (Love may be an understatement.)

And I love watching football.

I also happen to love a team that plays far, far away from where we live. Hence the Sunday Ticket. For the first few years it was glorious. All the games! Every Sunday! Including my beloved Oakland Raiders. During football season, Sundays became either a shameful display of sloth or a critical period of rest and recharging, depending on who you asked.

With two kids, however, opportunities for six hours of uninterrupted football-watching are downright unpossible. Also, my Raiders recently set an NFL record for futility, becoming the first franchise to post five consecutive seasons with 11 or more losses.

Do I really need to pay $249 dollars (!) in six stupid payments for the privilege of watching them play consistently terrible football? The answer, sadly, is no.

In our ongoing search for ways to trim the budget, NFL Sunday Ticket just got cut.

(Somebody please tell Mr. Ticket that coach needs to see him in his office, and to please bring his playbook.)

  • I do miss HardKnocks.

  • Great site! I’ll continue to check it out.

  • Jennifer and I decided to eschew cable tv when we moved into our house. Thus far, it’s been a great experience (especially since High-Def signals can be had over the air). Figure we’re saving about $70/month by not having cable. So far, so good … but, as Jennifer pointed out, we’ll see how it goes once baseball season starts. I feel your pain (or I will soon enough come spring).

  • This is truly a sad day for the Raider Nation.

  • Made the official call this morning… NFL Sunday Ticket is canceled. (If I change my mind, it will now cost $279.)

  • I wish they would let you just purchase the Sunday Ticket like they used too, when they went to the mandatory 1 year subscription to obtain the Sunday Ticket package they lost a lot of customers
