Glad to see someone else 'fessing up to library fines. I just paid $5.60 myself. But with the average price of a mass market paperback in NZ being around $30 (I nearly fainted when I found that out after immigrating), I'm WAY ahead. Trade paper books are commonly $60+. Yes, $60 for trade paper.

If a new book comes out by a favorite author of mine, my best bet is to pay to get it from the library- $5 for a week with a big name New Release book. If I wait a month or two, then it is free.

I'm down with all of those things! I just realized that in some cases, I really do need to own the book. Plus, buying it helps out a writer and the tottering industry that we hope will somehow continue to sustain us.

Seems like you came out ahead:
- you read many books for only $19.88
- saved valuable real-estate on the shelf
- don't have to dust them
- made a donation to the public library system
