I got an offer of a nice rental for my folks, so thought I’d better update! They just finalized a deal on a nice townhome on their way out of town. They’re excited, we’re excited, and I get to go approve the inspection in their place next week.
It was quite a whirlwind. They were looking for rentals, pricing lots and modular homes, and looking at townhomes all at once. Since it’s a buyer’s market, they were able to get the price they needed on the townhome in order to finish the basement. Something they swore they wouldn’t do again, but in the end the location and neighborhood (and the price) offset that hassle.
I also got a glimpse into dealing with the foreclosure market, and it isn’t pretty. We clicked on a Craigslist ad for a couple of nice looking places owned by the bank. That directed my mom to sign up with a company Web site for $1.95 to get addresses. Which turned out to be, if not an outright scam, then something that sure had that whiff. I’ve been meaning to track down that post and flag it. Once she got on and paid her money to HR National, the properties weren’t there.
What say you? Scam?
Anyway, for my parents at least, a happy ending.
