His and Her: Sex and Money

July 20th, 2008 by Sara

My husband took over the daily balancing of our joint account years ago, because:

a) He’s better at it.
b) He doesn’t bend himself into a sniveling, anxiety wracked pretzel in the process.

I get at least monthly updates about our financial sitch, requests to help make decisions about saving and spending, and reminders to breathe. Like this:

The most important thing you can do is not worry.

Which is great, except I want to boost my money managing skills by taking a more active role. I don’t want to find myself suddenly alone and clueless. Also, like many couples, we need more than ever to talk about money, or so I think, but have less time than ever to do it. After we put our kids to bed, it’s all we can do to feed ourselves and maybe watch something on TV before it’s lights out.

And here we careen straight into the money/sex dichotomy, on post #2! Well that didn’t take long.

Money reports in its latest issue, based on this press release from True.com, a dating site, that women think couples should talk more about money than men; men think we should talk more about sex.

Let’s Talk About Sex — or Money. When respondents were asked what
topics couples should talk more about (including money, sex, marriage,
parenting or nothing), results show that men and women definitely have
different priorities when it comes to discussing sex or money. Men
rated: sex No. 1 at 29 percent, followed by nothing at 22 percent,
with money in third place at 21 percent. Women put money talk in the
top spot at 33 percent followed by: nothing at 29 percent, marriage
at 16 percent and sex ranking fourth at 15 percent.

I think if we could find a way to do more of the former, we’d be having more of the latter. Look at O. Half the time, you can find Suze Orman, personal finance guru, before Dr. Phil’s relationship column. It’s like they laid out the equation for us:

Money = Empowerment = Fired-Up Dopamine Receptors = Sex

What I want to do is start talking about money in short bursts throughout the day (hmm, if only my bank were Twitter-enabled). Inside a Nerve shell, making us both happy.

  • Glad to see my husband and I fall into those neat categories. He certainly doesn’t like to talk about money.

Thanks for the comment on Dennis Cass. And thanks for coming by my blog. They aren’t short stories by the way. They’re true. Well, as true as I can remember them. James Frey I’m not.

And I’m going to explore the Writer Biz site. That looks useful, too.
